Sarawak, state in Malaysia, in the northwestern portion of the island of Borneo. Its area is about 124,449 sq km (48,050 sq mi). The capital is Kuching. The population of 1,648,217 (1990) is composed chiefly of Malays, Dayaks, and Chinese. The majority are Christians. Malay and English are the official languages. The head of state acts on the advice of a chief minister, who is responsible to a unicameral legislature. Sarawak became a British protectorate in 1888. It joined Malaysia in 1963.
